Managed API or self-hosted bridge?

Compare the operational responsibility, not just the software license.

By The Bluebook editorial · October 2, 2026

The useful distinction is who gets called when a conversation stops. A hosted API and a Mac-backed bridge may both offer programmable messaging, while assigning very different work to your team.

List the infrastructure owner

With a bridge, your organization supplies the relevant machine, account and network path. It maintains software and decides how access is protected. BlueBubbles documentation is a starting point for understanding that environment; the project’s open-source license does not create a production operations team.

A managed API supplies more of the environment. Your contract still needs to state support, recovery, identity and acceptable use. Hosting is a transfer of selected responsibilities, not a promise that every failure will be handled without application work.

Account for the application either way

A provider may accept a message before your HTTP request times out. Your app must distinguish a known failure from an unknown result. Incoming events can be duplicated or delayed. Store stable identifiers and build a reconciliation path before letting an automated agent repeat a business action.

Do not assume the features exposed by a client bridge match a managed service’s API. Compare the exact events, addressing model, permissions and documented configuration needed for your journey. OpenBubbles, for example, is reviewed here as a client alternative rather than an established managed backend API.

Use a small failure drill

Restart the bridge or temporarily disconnect the event consumer in a controlled test. Recover it and check whether the conversation record can be reconstructed. Confirm who notices the outage and who can act without the original developer.

Choose self-hosting when control and inspectability outweigh ongoing maintenance. Choose managed infrastructure when your team needs to concentrate on its product, then keep the provider’s recovery and export promises in writing. Neither choice eliminates the need for a human handoff.
